Spark Studio
In our upcoming session, the Sparks will be heading into the kitchen for a hands-on culinary experience! Learners will put on their chef hats and dive into the world of baking and cooking. We’ll explore simple recipes, practice measuring ingredients, and of course, enjoy the delicious treats we create together. The Sparks will also be teaming up with the Discovery Rebels for a friendly gingerbread building contest and collaborative cookie-baking fun. As part of a studio celebration, we’ll also be hosting a holiday book exchange on Friday, December 12. Learners are invited to bring a new, wrapped book with no name on it. All of the books will be placed in the center of our circle, and each learner will get to choose a surprise book to take home and enjoy. We are looking forward to a joyful, creative, and delicious session ahead!
Discovery Studio
Aprons on and imaginations ready - our next Quest takes Discovery Rebels into the kitchen for Session 3, The Science of YUM! Rebels will step into the role of young chefs as they build real-life skills through hands-on kitchen adventures. Throughout the next three weeks, learners will practice using units of measurement with accuracy, follow and create procedural writing, and read recipes with purpose and confidence. From mixing ingredients to writing clear step-by-step instructions, this Session blends math, literacy, and everyday life skills into one fun, meaningful (and delicious!) learning experience.
In Reader Writer workshops, Rebels will be focusing on procedural writing as they write recipes. Draw and Anchor Rebels will be working on how to write clear, sequential procedures by using recipes as an engaging, real-world mentor texts. Aim and Release Rebels will have the added challenge of bringing in a recipe that is memorable for them or their family, and adding a headnote to their recipe, as a way to share a personal story or origin story of their family dish. They’ll analyze how food bloggers and recipe book authors use precise vocabulary, measurements and safety notes to help readers follow steps successfully.
In Math Lab, Rebels will complete a Grocery Store Math project! As owners of a grocery store, they will engage in critical thinking about a variety of real-world problems such as: checking correct packaging involving grams and kilograms, telling and measuring analog time based on the store’s hours and baker’s recipes, pricing items to ensure they turn a profit, and working the cash register (including applying coupons).
Exploration Studio
Where in the World?! In Session 3, Exploration Rebels will travel the world learning about geography, history, and culture. Each learner will choose a country to independently explore through a series of Choose-Your-Own-Adventure research and hands-on activities. In the Math Lab, learners will participate in a series of real-world math challenges. They will complete a weekend road trip budget challenge, which includes calculating fuel costs, applying unit rates, and converting units, as well as a holiday shopping exercise to practice calculating percentages. Lastly, there will be a Holiday Math Concept Contest, where learners will receive an entry in our Holiday Wheel of Fortune draw for each completed handout. Rebels will also finish their Hobbit literary essay. We'll spend time receiving feedback, editing our drafts, and submitting our final pieces for display at Exhibition. In Personal Finance, Rebels will continue to play the Budget Game, take on a case study to decide whether to buy or lease a car, and discuss long-term planning in preparation for our Investment unit in Session 4. Living organisms have evolved into billions of different species since life first emerged over 3 billion years ago. In Big History, learners will investigate what defines life, the traits all living things share, and how life has changed over time. It won't be all work and no play. Rebels will participate in several traditions, including playing dreidel, decorating gingerbread houses, engaging in random acts of kindness, dressing up for Spirit Week, and exchanging Secret Santa gifts!
