Coming up in Session 2…

Spark Studio

Quest:

This session, the Sparks will become playground designers as they begin an exciting new Quest: Imagine, Design, Build: A Playground! Over the next five weeks, Sparks will explore what makes a playground fun, safe, creative, and welcoming for everyone. They will investigate different playground features, brainstorm their own imaginative ideas, create playground blueprints, and eventually bring their designs to life by building 3D models. Along the way, Sparks will practise creativity, problem-solving, communication, collaboration, and design thinking as they ask questions, make plans, test their ideas, and make improvements. We can't wait to see the incredible playgrounds they dream up!

Reader/Writer:

This session in Reader Writer, we will bring our Quest theme to life through storytelling, vocabulary building, and creative writing! Our Words of the Week will connect to our playground theme, with words like play, slide, build, and climb. We will also explore and share stories about playgrounds, sparking curiosity, conversation, and imagination. Our emerging readers, the Grasshoppers, will continue building their literacy foundations by introducing new vowels and consonants, strengthening their understanding of phonemes (sounds) and graphemes (letters and letter combinations). Our more experienced readers, the Shinobi, will focus on reading comprehension, developing thoughtful responses, and strengthening their sentence writing using our weekly vocabulary and shared phrases. Of course, we will also continue enjoying our Magic Tree House read-aloud, fostering a love of stories and reading together!

Math:

During this session, the Sparks will be exploring shapes and measurement through hands-on, playful learning experiences connected to our Playground Quest. Learners will identify and describe 2D and 3D shapes, explore how shapes can be combined to create structures, and investigate concepts such as size, length, height, and distance. They will have opportunities to estimate, compare, sort, build, and measure using both standard and non-standard tools. As they design their dream playgrounds, the Sparks will apply their growing mathematical understanding to real-world challenges, making math meaningful, creative, and fun!

Geography

Last session, our geography focus was on learning about the seven continents and developing an understanding of where they are located around the world. This next session, we will bring our learning closer to home as the Sparks take a deeper look at North America! We will explore the diverse cultures, foods, languages, landmarks, wildlife, landscapes, traditions, and buildings that make up our home continent. Through hands-on activities, stories, maps, and exploration, the Sparks will discover just how wonderfully diverse North America is!

French

Over the next six weeks, Sparks will develop their French vocabulary and communication skills through the themes of autumn and the home. They will learn to name the colours of autumn, identify seasonal objects, name the rooms of a house and recognize everyday objects. Through songs, vocabulary games, storytelling, and activities, they will practise pronunciation, learn to follow simple instructions in French, and practise forming simple sentences to describe objects and their location, using expressions such as « C’est une cuisine », « La feuille est jaune » and « Le chat est sous la table ».

Special Events & Reminders:

We have lots of exciting things planned for our next session! The Sparks will be heading on a field trip to Saunders Farm, participating in the Revel Pumpkin Run, enjoying some Halloween fun, and exploring new themes for our Show and Share. Please see the poster on BAND for the weekly Show and Share themes and ideas. As a reminder, Sparks are welcome to bring one toy from home along with their Show and Share item to enjoy during Fun Friday. With the weather beginning to change, please also remember to check and restock your learner’s bin with seasonally appropriate extra clothes. Thank you for helping us keep our Sparks prepared for all the fun ahead!

Discovery Studio

Quest: Wild Canada!

This session, our Discovery Rebels are embarking on a new and exciting expedition across Canada! Through collaborative missions, hands-on challenges, and independent research, Rebels will explore Canada's geography, history, wildlife, national parks, and Indigenous cultures and stories. Working in expedition teams, Rebels will become cartographers, geographers, historians, and wildlife researchers as they piece together a lost Canadian atlas, investigate provinces and territories, identify significant landmarks, and explore the diverse landscapes and communities that make Canada unique. Throughout the Quest, Rebels will collect evidence of their learning, create maps and research projects, and prepare interactive displays to share their discoveries at our Wild Canada Summit!

Reader Writer

Our Reader Writer workshops will support our Wild Canada theme as Rebels become researchers, writers, and designers, creating informative and engaging travel brochures highlighting Canada's provinces and territories. Rebels will investigate geographical features, wildlife, cultural traditions, historical landmarks, and interesting facts about their assigned destinations. Through research, note-taking, drafting, revising, and editing, they will learn how to transform information into clear, organized nonfiction writing. Emphasis will be placed on identifying reliable sources, organizing information using headings and subheadings, writing in their own words, and using accurate spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Rebels will also explore how visual design, maps, and illustrations can enhance their writing and communicate information effectively. Their completed brochures will become part of our Wild Canada Summit, inviting others to discover the unique characteristics of each region.

Math Lab: Expedition by Numbers

This session, our Discovery Rebels are putting their mathematical skills to the test as they embark on a five-week expedition across Canada's vast wilderness! Through hands-on mapping challenges, wildlife tracking, distance calculations, and expedition planning, Rebels will discover how mathematics helps us navigate, measure, and explore the world around us. Working through two differentiated learning pathways, Rebels will tackle weekly missions that build their understanding of coordinates, measurement, metric conversions, and problem-solving. Our Draw & Anchor Rebels will develop foundational mapping and measurement skills, practice addition, subtraction, multiplication, and introductory division, and explore how to calculate and compare distances. Aim & Release Rebels will take on more complex challenges involving map scales, multi-step calculations, long division, and interpreting remainders in real-world scenarios. Each week brings a new expedition challenge, from locating lost checkpoints and tracking wildlife migrations to managing supplies and planning routes across Canadian regions.

French Workshop

This session in French, Discovery Rebels will dive into the world of mysteries and escape rooms! Through riddles, secret codes, vocabulary games, and detective challenges, they will build their French vocabulary, improve their reading comprehension, and practise writing clues and following instructions. Working together, they will investigate suspects, decipher hidden messages, and solve puzzles, all while learning to communicate in French. They will also have the opportunity to create their own riddles and challenges along the way. To wrap up the session, Rebels will put their skills to the test in an autumn-themed escape room, where they will need to work as a team, think creatively, and use their French to solve the mystery!

Exploration Studio

Quest: Careers & Entrepreneurship
Exploring Possibilities and Building Connections

This session, our Exploration Rebels are stepping beyond the Studio and into the exciting world of careers and entrepreneurship! Through real-world experiences, community connections, and hands-on inquiry, Rebels will explore different career pathways, discover what it takes to turn an idea into a business, and connect with local businesses and professionals. With opportunities to engage with businesses in our community, Rebels will strengthen their networking and communication skills, practice asking thoughtful questions, and gain insight into the creativity, perseverance, and problem-solving that drive success in the professional world.

Throughout this Quest, Rebels will strengthen essential competencies including entrepreneurial thinking, leadership, professional communication, networking, critical thinking, and creative problem-solving. They'll also develop collaboration, self-awareness, initiative, and adaptability as they navigate new experiences, build meaningful connections, and gain the confidence to explore opportunities beyond their comfort zones.

Beyond exploring careers, this Quest is about helping Rebels discover their own strengths, interests, and potential. They'll investigate what it means to think like an entrepreneur, develop confidence in professional conversations, and explore how innovation, leadership, and initiative can create meaningful opportunities. Most importantly, Rebels will begin connecting their learning to the world beyond Revel, recognizing that their ideas, curiosity, and contributions already have the potential to make an impact!

French Workshop

This session in French, Exploration Rebels will also explore the world of mysteries and escape rooms while putting their French skills to the test. They will investigate clues, decode secret messages, analyse witness statements, and solve puzzles, all while developing their French reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, and writing skills.

As they uncover the secrets of a good mystery, Rebels will begin creating their own escape rooms entirely in French. They will develop an original storyline, design a series of connected puzzles, and write the clues and instructions needed to guide their players through the adventure. They will challenge one another to solve their escape rooms, test their creations, and make improvements along the way.
