Spark Studio
Quest
We are excited for our final school session of the year: Art! In Quest, the Sparks will spend four dedicated weeks exploring a variety of hands-on art projects. During week one, they will design and build paper and cardboard sculptures using their imagination. In week two, they will experiment with pool noodle sculptures, creating unique 3D designs. Week three will introduce famous artists such as Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso as inspiration for their own artwork. Finally, in week four, the Sparks will be on a mission to complete art projects using only egg cartons! Throughout these weeks, learners will also learn about the colour wheel, explore warm and cool colours, create line art, and use gift bags to design mindfulness-inspired collages. We are also excited for a visit to the National Gallery of Canada, where the Sparks will take part in a guided workshop led by gallery staff.
Book Study
We will also complete our last book study of the year with The Good Egg, a fun and thoughtful story about a little egg who tries hard to be perfect and learns the importance of balance, self-care, and accepting others. The Sparks will read the story together and complete activity booklets that help them explore the elements of the story. With Canada Day approaching, we’ll also spend time learning about Canada’s provinces and territories, their flags, well-known landmarks, and traditions. These geography lessons will help the Sparks build a sense of place, pride, and curiosity about the country we call home.
Additional Highlights
The final week of school will be filled with exciting outdoor activities and celebrations. The Sparks will enjoy a swim day at Raven Park wading pool, participate in school-wide Olympics, enjoy a visit from the ice cream truck, and celebrate all summer birthdays together with piñatas!
Show and Share
This month’s Show and Share theme is focused on outdoor materials. Each week will feature a different theme, such as bringing a ball, sand toys or trucks, or bug-hunting tools. A poster with dates and details has been posted on BAND. We look forward to ending the school year with creativity, laughter, and lots of memorable experiences outside!
Discovery Studio
Quest
As we embark on our last session of the school year, our Quest takes Rebels into the wonderful world of art! In this Quest, Rebels explore the core elements of art (line, shape, colour, value, texture, form, and space). Through studying influential artists and engaging in hands-on studio work, they will experiment with different techniques to communicate ideas, emotions, and stories. This badge recognizes a Discovery Rebel’s ability to apply these elements intentionally in their own creative work and reflect on their artistic growth. Rebels will explore constructivist art for line and shape, collaborate with the Sparks on a colour and value sculpture, create model dragon eyes for texture and form, and design watercolour landscapes for space and perspective. Along the way, Rebels will have weekly sketchbook assignments that give learners the opportunity to exercise their artistic muscles through a series of element specific sketching challenges. We are so excited to see all that the Rebels create this session!
Reader Writer Workshops
For Session 7, Rebels will explore the power of poetry through reading, writing, and performance. Throughout this badge, Rebels will experiment with poetic techniques such as imagery, rhythm, rhyme, repetition, and figurative language while studying a variety of poets and styles. Learners will create original poems that express ideas, emotions, stories, and perspectives, while developing confidence in using words creatively and intentionally. This badge celebrates voice, creativity, reflection, and the courage to share meaningful writing with others.
Math Lab
How do we explain math concepts so clearly that someone else could learn from us? For our final Math Lab of the year, the Rebels are stepping into the role of educators. Throughout this workshop series, learners will create three polished anchor charts based on math concepts they have mastered this year. As Math Mentors, Rebels will focus on explaining their thinking clearly, organizing information in meaningful ways, and using visuals, examples, and strategies to help others learn. This work encourages learners to deepen their own understanding while practicing communication, creativity, and leadership through mathematics.
Exploration Studio
Quest
Welcome to Session 7! We will spend the remaining weeks of the year exploring and developing our creative and artistic sides! In Quest, we will learn about the elements of art and principles of design before building our observation and technical drawing skills. We'll then learn how to add colour to our pieces before moving on to mixed media and a sculptural collaboration with the Sparks! The last weeks of the Quest will be spent creating a personal passion project from a range of artistic areas, including carving, mosaics, fashion, fibre, or another form that the Rebels' pitch. To further enhance our artistic journey, we will utilize our time at launches and closings to explore public speaking, drama, photography, and music! We can't wait to show off what we are most proud of at the full school Revel Gallery on Thursday, June 25th!
Reader/Writer - Poetry
Our last Reader/Writer workshop of the year will encourage creativity, interpretation, and thoughtful analysis while helping learners build confidence in both reading and writing poetry! Through reading, analyzing, discussing, and writing poetry, Rebels will develop an understanding of key poetic devices and techniques. We will explore types of rhyme, alliteration and assonance, rhyme scheme, rhythm and meter, form and poetic structure, and the use of imagery and sensory language.
Instead of our usual paragraph of the week, learners will write a new type of poem each week, including Haikus, 7-line Cascading poems, Sonnets, Confession or Child-to-Parent poems, and create Blackout poetry. They will pick the work they are most proud of to display at our Exhibition.
Museum Exhibit
Having finished the Big History Thresholds, it is time for Rebels to dive deep into an event, person, or historical topic of their choice. After pitching their idea for a museum exhibit, they will research and create a display complete with their research, a timeline, a map, at least one artifact, and a properly formatted Works Cited section. Will they explore the life of Amelia Earhart? Renaissance architecture? Create a picture of Mayan life before and after colonization? We can't wait to learn more about the Rebels' interests!
Math Lab - Game Time!
In this session, learners will design and create their own engaging math game that helps others practice and learn important concepts in a fun, interactive way! We'll begin by playing a series of math games and identifying which have the most learning value and which are the most engaging. Then, after reflecting on concepts we personally struggle with, Rebles will review the curriculum expectations and choose the focus of their game. From board games to card games to digital ideas, learners will combine critical thinking and creativity to make math meaningful and enjoyable for everyone!
Revel Traditions
After our Exhibition, we'll spend the last week of school celebrating our accomplishments! With the Rebel Olympics, Summer Birthday Party, Piñatas, Ice Cream Truck and more, it is sure to be a fun end to a memorable year!
